Penguin Peninsula

Nikki Wallace-Bell / Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour

Over 100 ceramic kororā / white flippered penguins made by the community on display at Naval Point Lyttelton

Tirohia / Look

The kororā (white-flippered penguin) breeds around Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour. This is one of the world’s smallest penguins, growing just over 25 cm tall and weighing only 1.5 kg, yet its presence has been identified by Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour as an indicator species – and a weighty barometer of a healthy harbour.

Ceramic artist Nikki Wallace-Bell has collaborated with kaumātua (elders) from Ngāti Wheke, the local community, tamariki (children) from Lyttelton Primary School, Climate Action Campus, and families from Naval Point Club to create a giant waddle of kororā.

Over 100 individually designed ceramic kororā take centre stage at locations around Naval Point to spark conversations about the ecosystems and habitats necessary for a thriving kororā population.
