Te Whare o Rei / Rei Gallery

Observations and research from a collective of ringatoi (artists) at this kaupapa Māori toi gallery.

Tirohia / Look

Rei is a Māori-owned and operated gallery under local mana whenua Kāti Wheke. Within Rei, a collective of artists is committed to pushing boundaries, generating conversations, and creating new possibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. As carvers, sculptors, painters, and weavers, their aims are to support emerging, mid-career, and established artists in Ōtautahi/Christchurch.

As an extension of Whakaraupō Carving Centre, the idea behind Rei is to include individuals and groups from all backgrounds who are a part of te ao Māori (the Māori world). They aim to create pathways and opportunities for rangatahi (youth) who show an affinity for toi Māori (Māori arts), and increase its visibility in the South Island, Te Waipounamu.

In this exhibition the collective has created work that responds to local research and their observations of the environment. These works speak to the change and/or connection to the local whenua (land) that the artists hope to inspire in their audience.

Exhibition runs until 9 January 2025
